About Richmond

An economically progressive city and Virginia’s capital, Richmond offers a wealth of amenities not easily found among other East Coast municipalities.  The City of Richmond is a great place to buy your next house.  There are many thriving neighborhoods within the city limits, including The Fan District, Jackson Ward, Westover Hills, Carver, Church Hill, Union Hill and The Museum District.

Richmond’s complete livability can be measured in numerous ways: beautiful neighborhoods with striking architecture; a vast cultural and educational heritage befitting its nearly 200,000 citizens; and noted historic prestige tracing back to the early English settlers.

Nationally recognized for its vitality and New Economy embrace, Richmond’s diversified employment base extends from chemical, food and tobacco manufacturing to biotechnology, semiconductors and high-tech fibers. The city consistently ranks among “Best Places to Live and Work in America” in several national publications.

Richmond is among a handful of mid-sized cities to offer a flourishing cultural community enhanced by several first-class museums and prominent universities, including Virginia Commonwealth University in The Fan District and the University of Richmond, its own symphony, professional ballet and opera, and numerous theater companies and art galleries.

While offering easy access to the ocean, mountains and Washington, D.C., Richmond features countless pastimes at home. Trendy boutiques and restaurants, numerous sports and entertainment attractions, outdoor pursuits among one of the nation’s largest river park systems, and a treasure trove of historic landmarks provide fun times galore.

For the five million who visit each year, Richmond is increasingly recognized for many distinguished yet unheralded qualities long enjoyed by those who already live here.

About Chesterfield County

The county's 446 square miles include more than 20 public parks, featuring more than 8,700 acres of green space for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts. Included is Pocahontas State Park, named after the famous Indian Princess, where families are welcome to picnic, bike and hike, camp and swim.

Bounded by the James and Appomattox rivers with 3,000-acre Lake Chesdin on its southern border and Swift Creek in the western section, Chesterfield is an ideal location for fishing and water sports. The Dutch Gap Conservation Area, believed to be the only such site operated by a county government in the country, offers a bounty of birds, fish and waterfowl, as well as raccoon, muskrat, groundhog and deer. It is home to a rare blue heron rookery, bald eagles and songbirds such as the yellow-throated warbler.

Chesterfield County’s central location on the eastern seaboard places it within a one-day drive of 50 percent of the U.S. population.

Here, there's an abundance of historical landmarks and sites, including the 1611 Citie of Henricus, Magnolia Grange, the Courthouse Complex and Castlewood. Civil War sites include Drewry’s Bluff, Howlett Line Park, Parker’s Battery, Fort Darling Battlefield Park, Bermuda Hundred and more.

Chesterfield County is located just one hour from Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, America’s first permanent English settlement; Washington, D.C., Virginia Beach and the Blue Ridge Parkway are just two hours away; and Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens theme parks are both less than an hour away.

There's easy access to Interstates 64, 95, 85 and 295.

Amtrak stations are nearby in Richmond, Petersburg and Ettrick, and Richmond International Airport features five commercial airlines and serves more than two million passengers a year. The Chesterfield County Airport, an excellent general aviation facility with a modern Instrument Landing System, is conveniently located off Rt. 10 and Rt. 288 in the heart of the county. It serves a wide range of private and corporate aircraft.

About Petersburg

Petersburg was originally known as Peter's Point. The settlement was granted its first charter as a town on December 17, 1748. In 1850, the town of Petersburg was consolidated with the nearby settlements of Blandford, Pocahontas, and Ravenscroft to become a City, the third in Virginia, with a population of 14,010.

The port of Petersburg was a commercial center for processing and transporting cotton, tobacco, and metal goods. As transportation technology evolved, Petersburg became an important railroad center, continuing to process products from southside Virginia and distributing them to external markets.

Both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are prominent in Petersburg's history. The City is well known for the Battle of the Crater when Union troops attempted to tunnel under Confederate lines with disastrous results. The seige of Petersburg precipitated Lee's surrender and the end of the war. Today, the City retains established manufacturing and tourism based industries. It is conveniently located for manufacturers which distribute their products on the east Coast.
